HONOURS TO K. W. DYER

FINE PLAY SEEN IN MEN'S DOUBLES In the Christmas tennis tournament, K. W. Dyer, of Tauranga, put up a fine performance by winning the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles in spite of a strenuous programme for Saturday, in whieh he played 14 sets. He proved himself the outstanding player of the tournament, and his wellearned victories were applauded by a gallery of *400, who took a delight in his easy court manner and ready smile when in difficulties. In the final of the championship singles against J. Aitkenhead, his club-mate and doubles partner, Dyer, who is a left-hander, took an early lead in the first set with sure stroking on both wings and ran the score to- 5 — 2. Aitkenhead took the next three games with nice volleys and overhead work. In the tenth game with Aitkenhead serving, Dyer took ?{ lead of 15 — 49 and +hen di*opped two set ponts by netting three overheads in succession. iand after three deuces his opponent forced home the advantage to make the games 5-all. • Dyer won the next game off his service, and took the next to win the first set, 7—5. In the second set, both played patchy tennis and a stiff cross-court breeze did not help. Aitkenhead lost touch eompletely and allowed Dyer to march throiuigh to win 6 — 0 with the loss of only nine points. In the third set, . both men found better length and stroked more confidently, and Aitkenhead delighted the crowd in the eighth game with a beautiful backhand passing* shot to equalise the score at 4-all. Dyer took the next game on his service from 40 — 15, and broke Aitkenhead's service in the next . with a smashing attack, and although - Aitkenhead retrieved well, his second lob failed to find the court, and gav-e Dyer the match in straight sets, 7—5, 6—0, 6—4. Marathon in Men's Doubles In the final of the ladies' championship singles, Miss P. Worthington, of Eden-Epsom, proved superior to her junior Auckland opponent, Miss A. Wilson, and applied her forehand to good effect. Miss Worthington had an all-round advantage in stroking and groiuind shots, and maintained the attack throughout, to win 6 — 1, 6—3. The highlight of the programme was the men's championship doubles between Dyer and Aitkenhead, of Tauranga, and A. C. Stedman and A. M. 'Gunn, of Auckland. What the Aucklander's lacked -in vigorous attdcking they made up for in clever placings and defence, concentrating their shots on Aitkenhead's half of the court. A featuire of this game was Stedman's accurate and consistent returns of service. The Tauranga men dominated the game from the net throughout, keeping the Aueklanders on the defence by clean vollying and accurate smashing, direeting their main attack at Gunn. Aitkenhead was slow to follow his service and was often trapped at half-eourt by Btedman. At 5-all irthe first set, Aitkenhead won his service, and the Tamiranga pair then broke Gunn's slow spin service to wiri 7 — 5. The Aucklanders took a 3 — 1 lead in the second set but lost the initiative again at 3-all, and the Taurang'a, pair went on to win, 6 — 3. The7 opening of the third set was marked by bad errors 'by .the leaders, but Aitkenhead became aggressive in the fourth game, and in the sixth, Dyer equalised the score with his service, Which had \ Gunn woi-ried throughoiut. Again1 with the score at 6 — 7, Dyer. took a love game on his .service, and Gunn dropped his own. Aitkenhead then took the initiative, and finished with • a spin delivery v/hich Stedman failed to hook back, giving the Tauranga pair a love game, set and match, 7 — 5, 6 — 3, 9 — 7. Mixed Doubles Contest In the ladies' championship doubles, Misses P. and N. Worthington prevaile'd over Mrs. M. Veitch of Milford, and Miss M. Knight of Rotorua, 6 1, 2—6, 6—1. Miss N. Worthington's solid driving and net play ably baeked up her sister's attacks. Miss Knight, the only Rotorua player to figure in two championship finals, was strong in her vollying. In the last match of Saturday in a cold wind which had driven most of the spectators home, Dyer elaimed further honours in the final of the mixed championship doubles, baclced up ably by Mrs. N. Free, who produced iher best form of the tournament with accurate volleys and placements, against C. W. Penney and Miss M. Knight, of Rotorua. In spite. of the wind, the play was good Penney and Miss Knight played well but were forced on to the defensive and Penney lost golden opportunities to make winners of his smashes. Although Dyer dominated the game throughout, Miss Knight's game was very sound, and the Rotorua^ pair maintained equality 'by consistent stroking. . Dyer and Mrs. Free clinched the •first set at 7—5 and -an up a 5— d lead in the second, but the RotW'ua pair equalised at 5-all. In tne 11th game, with Dyei* holding the vantage point, Penney lost his footing while ma,Wng a successful retan wluch Mrs Free volleyed. Miss Knight cleverly covered, but Dyer, observing his opponent' s plight, made--Tio apparent effort to sustain the rally. The next game went to Dyer and Mrs. Free with clever placements by the latter, to feive them the set and the match, 7— J5, 7—4). Details: — CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
