Mrs. Emma Andrews
The death occurred on Saturday , laiorning at the Rotorua Hospital 'of one of the oldest residents of the district, Mrs. Emma Andrews, at the age of 79. The late Mrs. Andrews, whose husband, Mr. Stephen Andrews, predeceased her by two years, was born in the military camp at Gate Pa in 1868, being the daughter of Ensig-n John Walmsley, who was adjutant to Major Gilbert Mair. At the age o-f 20, Mrs. Andrews eame to Rotorua, and on the night of . the Tarawera eruption, she trekked out to the Awahou mission station with the other women, but on the following morning, on borseback, she accompanied her brother-in-law, Mr. Bussey, a telegraph linesman , who was entrusted with the repairing of the telephone connection over j the devastated area. The late ' Mrs. Andrews had lived a retired life on Clayton Road until her admission to hospital some months ago. She is survived by four daughters, Mesdames W. Lemon J (Papakura), W. J. Costello (Clayton Road), N. Beck and C. J. Wright (Rotorua), and- by one son, Ma-. 1 Charles Andrews, of Rotorua. There are 15 grand-ehildren and eight ( great grand-children. ' %
