POLICEMEN FOR HIRE IN ENGLAND

> IN UNIFORM, PLAIN CLOTHES OR ON H.ORSEBACK You can hire a policeman in London if you want to. It will cost you anything from 4 3s ldi to £1 10s ld a day, according to the rank of the man or woman you hire. The only qualification for such a hiri-ng is that you must have a suitable reason which will satisfy headquarters. •Scotland Yard has a detailed "price list" for such things. The scale of charges has now been revised to bring the pay into line with the ordinary rates paid to ofRcers "pursuing their normal course of duty." The latest list fixes the scales for the uniformed bi'anch at £4 3s ld a day, 10s 5d an hour, or a minimum of £1 11s 3di for a superintendent, down to £1 10s ld, 3s aOd an hour, or a minimum of 11s 6d for a constable. If you want to hire a "big shot" from the C.I.D. the scale is slightly higiher. A superintendent in tfyis j grade will cost you £4 5s lld a day, and a constable £1 12s 5d daily. Women police are available at al-i most "bargain basement" prices. A woman inspector from the uniformed branch will cost £1 17s 5d a day or 4s 9d an hour, while constables come at 13s '6di a day and ls 7d an hour cheapei. Women from the C.I.D. are slightly more expensive. An inspector costs £1 19s lild a day and a constable £1 '6s 4d daily. Say Scotland Yard: "W'e must first be satisfied that there is a real need from anyone who wants to hire before we let the man go out. Natur- j ally the hired men are men who are 1 off duty — we could not have the force depleted. ( "Typical' occasions on which men i are hired out are such events as gardien parties, weddings, sports meetings, and speeial saies. "There is quite^a demand for such duties and no reasonable application is ignored." Postscripts — If you want your man in plain clothes it will cost you ls 6d a day extra. Morning clothes or evening dress cost an other l)s 6d. If you want to do the job in style and have your policeman mounted there is an extra charge of 10s a day for the horse.
