CITY BOYS' BAND IN OPEN-AIR CONCERT
Nine Amateur Artists Also Entertain Playing before a large audience at the lakefront concert platform last night,- the 40-piece Auckland City Boys' Band was well received in its first full-length concert presented in Rotorua. The programme, augmented later by amateur artists, was- part of the carnival week -elebrations organised by the Rotorua Borough Conmcil Advancement Gommittee in conjunction with the 30,000 -Club. Money gained from this and other concerts will go toward the band's funds to enable it to attend the Kew Zealand Brass Band Championships at Wanganui in February, for which 41 of New Zealand's bands have entered. In last night's programme the band played nine items, including Newtown (march), Garden Party (waltz), Veronica (selection), Rosy Cross (gallop), Our Director (march), Musical Memories (selection), Beer Barrel Polka and Middy (march), with a short selection of Christmas carols. All items were well received by the auidience who showed their appreciation by applause and the blowing -of motor horns. The response to the request for. entertainers in the talent quest
was surprisingly good, and! of the nine amateurs who came , forward eight were visitors to Rotorua. Another pleasing feature of this section of the programme was the high standaridi of all items. Songs were sung ,by Miss 'Gloria Clayton, who was accompanied by Mr. J. Josephs on the guitar. Mr. Josephs also played solo items on his instrument, which was rigged with a contact microphone. A Scottish song and dance item was given by Miss Louise Lithgow, of Wellington, one of the younger entertainers of the evening. Another young entertainer was Miss Barbara Howell, also of Wellington, who recited "Bringing Up Father." Accompanying herself on the pianoaccordion, Miss Rewa Van Dongen sang several popular songs. Mr. Kyle, of Te Kuiti, gave a banjo solo, and he was followed by Mrs. Jury, of Hamilton, in vocal solos. Mis. Johnson sang two Italian songs, unaccompanied, and Mr. J. Bryce's piano bracket of popular tuines was also found very acceptable.
