FEW ACCIDENTS OVER HOLIDAY PERIOD

Roads Holding Satisfactorily Patrolmen of the Auckland Automobile Association have been fully occupied since the beginning- of the Christmas vacation in attending to the welfare of the thousands of motorists at present using the roads. Few cases of serious accident or breakdowns have been- reported in the district as yet, hut association officials have warned that the danger period will occux during the New Y ear. Hundreds of minor troubles have been remedied by the patrols," in the main tyre and tube troubles which are the inevitable result of continued use of old tyres because of the difficulty of replacement. In spite of continued rain, the patrols have reported that most roads appear to be hearing- »urp well to the particularly heavy traffic. The 'old Hangatiki-Otorolianga Road, which is being used in lieu of the main. south road, which is'at present being sealed, is reported to be holding quite satisfactorily. A few small pot-holes are encountered but these are easily visible. Some motorists have had trouble in obtaining- petrol over the past few days and "emergency" calls have been fairly frequent. To-day petroF stations will be open until midday, while on Sunday the roster system will be in operation. 'On Monday and Tuesday, stations will open as usual from 7.30 unfil 6 p.m., and on -New Year's Day all stations are allowed to remain open fr,om 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. Under the emergency system petrol may he obtained after that hour if the proprietor can be found. Patrolmen in the South Auckland area have reported that a number of drivers are motoring on the centreline rather than on their correct side of the road. However a vigilant watch is being kept hy officers of the traffic department -who have -been displaying signs on the front of patrol cars hearing the injunction "Keep Left."
