VICAR SENTENCED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT
The Rev. Joseph Richardson Holmes, 42-year-old vicar of Netherton, Cumberland, since 1942, had two sides to his career, one of them was almost unknown. This one-time pit worker had earned a reputation, first as curate then as vicar for his: Generosity. — His vicarage was an open house for the youth of the district. He entertained them, took them on outings, and brought them presents. Said the Rev. M. R. Sinker, vicar of Dalton-in-Furness : "Several boys are now leading fine lives because of the help he gave them." Yet the Rev. J. R. Holmes was Dishonest. — At Carlisle Assizes he was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for fraudulent conversion of church and school funds. He pleaded guilty to 13 charges involving £1060. Mr. Justice Stable paid this compliment to him when passing sentence : "Through your own efforts you qualified for this great calling, for which obviously in many respects you are absolutely fitted."
