MINER GIVEN LEAVE TO SING IN OPERA
Ieuen Evans, 30-year-old Tonypandy, Glamorganshire, colliery v/orker, has been told that he may leave his jcb to sing in opera. The manager of the colliery agreed to give Evans 12 months' leave so that he could take up a contract oh'ered by the CoVent Garden Opera Company. Evans was held by the Essential "W'orks Order. He was released, said a National Serviee officer, because he is a surface worker. It may not be so easy for the cther Welshman. chosen by Covent Garden, . Wilfred Jones, of Trelewis, to get his release, said the officer, Jones is an underground worker. .Mr. W. H. Mainwaring, M.P. for East Rhondda, who had written to Mr. Shinwell, applying f oi; Evans' reiease, told the pitman: "Dcn'fc worry about the end of the year. Be such a suecess that you will never return to the mines." Evans is due to take up his new career on October 28. ■
