MATAURA LIGNITE BRIQUETTES
The fact that a further test on Mataura lignite had been carried out in New Zealand, with the object of testing its 'briquetting properties was revealed at the meeting of the Southland Regional Planning Council recently. The first test, which was made in Australia, at Yallourn, was made with air-dried lignite, and was a failure. Later tests, made in New Zealand, have indicated that it may, after all, be possible to hi'iquette Mataura lignite.. The moisture content of the lignite used in the first test was 21.8 per cent. but in the second test, it was 30.4 per cent. The Dominion Laboratory" of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has therefore reco-m-mended that the nature and quantity of the reserves of coal available over the whole Mataura field, should be .determined in greater detail and' with due regard to variations on analiysis; that further briquetting trials should be proceeded with, as this would seem to ofrer the hest prospects for a major industry; that carbonisation experiments are not favoured except when in conjunction with a briquetting scheme; that complete gasification is not yet a commercial proposition; that in certain cases, the raw coal could be burned in special equipment, provided it was not transported' for any great 'distance; and that, owing to the scope in Southland for the development of hydro-electric sehemes the development of electric power from coal may not'he desirahle.
