SWIMMING CARNIVAL AT BLUE BATHS

Branch, in Backstroke I • The first swimming carnival of the ; season, held at the Blue Baths on ' Saturday by the Ohinemutu Swimj ming Club, attracted a large gathering of spectators and embraced a j wide representation of competitors ; from *the district, as well as from • Hamilton, Auckland' andi Te Pulce. j With almost pei*fect weather, the J carnival provided a comprehensive land continuous programme extending [ over nearly two hours. ' Some attractive swimming was J witnessed, and some promising talent '■revealed. Outstanding* among the male swimmers was D. Branch, of Rotorua, who registered a great performance in the 100 yards open backstroke, which he swam in 67 seconds, only two-fifths of a second outsiie the N.Z. senior championship time. The holder of this record is G. ClifF, of Canterbury, and shou-ld Branch go to Nelson next February, a good contest can be expected. A competitor on Saturday was Miss Iv. Grey, now of Rotorua, who is the holder of the New Zealand ladies' record in the l'O 0 yards and 200 metres events. Next Saturday a carnival of wider range will be presented by the Bay of Plenty sub-centre, when swimmers from the Waikato and the Bay of
