In the start of a mateh in Newcaslle against a New South Wale-( .-ountry team to-day, an English team i;ade 395 runs in ,the first innings. The only incident oeeurred when Langridge, playing for England, snieked a hall to Pickles, and was declared out hy the umpire. Langridge appealed .against the decision, and after a conference of the umpires, his apjieal was upheld, and he continued to play, to make 21 runs. Hammond's 142, which occupied 110 minutes, including oue six, was ihe highlight of England's innings, eiuling 10 minutes before stumps. Hammond, however, should have been easily stuunpod when three. He was the only hatsman to play the bowling with alisolute confidence. Fishlock's 110 was scratchy, and he w*as dropped when his seore reached severn. l)e Courcy's cateh, dismissing Washbrooke in slips, was really brilliant. Hutton was dropped when he gave an easy catch at point when 18. Hammond and Fishlocl: added. 195 for Ihe third wicket in 133 minutes.
