A Boy Scout Just a little cleauer, smarter than the rest — Rather better mannered, rather better dressed; Pnompt 'obeyfing urders, thougftitful all the while, i Not forgetting ever to whistle and to smile; ] Kind to every creature, gentle with ■ the old, i Stroug against the bully, ■ honourable ' and bold"; - j Bold against the bc.d thinge, for the • good things strong, | There you have a Boy Seout-subject i of my song. ( In loolcing fnrough the last eopy j of Seo.uting in iNew Zealand, "Path- i finder" came across the above poem , by Colwyn Phillips, who was himself j one of the finest Boy Scouts ibefore j he gave his life in the First WorlJ • War. To 'Pathfinder" it appeared a fitting eondusion to- our many little j talks on the Seout Law in these columns and if every Scout would learn ! each line and learning it put the | whole into > daily practiee, then each i one of you could say, Here you have ! a real Boy Scout." Have a shot at it J lads and help us to help you to be a little better than the rest. j Well lads, Christmas is not far off, ' no doubt you are wonderring what j Santa Claus is going to pop down the chimney and what he is going* to leave , behind. Well lads have a real good ! time, and to one and all "Pathfinder" ! extends his best wishes for a happy and a Holy Christmas. i Headquarters Troop j A "Scouts Own" conducted by the Rev. F. J. Green, was held at the 1 last meeting of the Troop and after the "Prayers and Reading" had been : given by two Scouts, Mr. Green gave an inspiring address based . on the , third .Scout Law stressing thc great ! importance of "brotherly love" and : the importance of helping one another. The troop is indebted to Mr. j Green for his assistance and "Scouts Own" will be held next year at frequent intervals. As the meeting was the last one for the year, a parents' night was held and a representative gathering of parents and members of the Local Association present. Before supper was served, G.S.M. McCleave extended a welcome to all present and expressed 'his pleasuve that the troop had progressed so wejl. Other speakers were the group chairman, Mr. W|. J. Woolliams and District Commissioner, Mr. J. F. Thomas, Training Commissioner, J. Ghambers, District Scoutmaster, C. C. K. Dallaston and the Chairman of the Local Association, Mr. Harris. On behalf of the Troop, the G.S.M. expressed the troop's great appreeiation of the wonderful assistance that "Friar Tuck" (Mr.~ Dallaston) had given to the troop and t(hen asked the group chairman to make a presentation from the troop to him in recognition of fh}s valuab4te iservice and ever-ready assistance. The P.L's through, P.L. Beale, also made a presentation to "Friar Tuck" and the heartfelt wish was that next year would quickly pass and the trcjop would soon have their dear old Friar back in their midst again. Supper, whidh was from all appearances a very happy and pleasant time, was followed by a most successful Camp Fire conducted by "Friar Tuck" during which a "stunt" from j Robin Hood and his merry men por- | trayed Neil Farrant as Liz, Graham I Beale as the villian, Rogei* Butt as the hero and Neil Billingham as the j unwilling husband ibeing tangled in j the matrimonial knot by Friar Tuck was successfully perfonned. Camp Fire songs, a reeitation by Peter McCleave ;and "Taps"' through t a pleasant night to a close. The Troop is indebted to Mr. Ewart for his gift of a gramophone and ! records and also to the valuable as- j sistance the ladies' committee gave j in caring for the supper arrange- J ments. Headquarters Troop, to one and all extends a very Happy Christ- j mas and a big "thank you" to all its i friends and1 supporters.
