DANGER OF HANDLING CATCHLESS RIFLES
MASTERTON, Dcrcmber 19. Finding that Francis Rowen Ilurae, 25, Wellington, died on December 6 as the result of a bullet wound from an accidentally diseharged rifle, the district Cnroner, Mr. L. J. Taylor, a.lded a ridcr stressinp; the danger of earrying arms not fully eqaipped. At the inquest at Masterton it was deposed thai the sai'ety-catch of the rille Ilume was earrying had been vemoved. With Peter Angus Mackie, Brooklyn, Wellington, Ilume was engaged in deer-culling operations in the KaiI tuna section of the Tararua ranges. : Returning from a day's shooting, ' Hume slipped down a steep bank and ' the .303 rifle he was earrying diseharged, family woanding him. Lieenees shoul.l be refused unless such arms were fully eiiuipjied with safety deviee-s, said Mr. Taylor. When lieenees were issued, printed instructions should be given, pointing out the cave necessary to prevent accidents of this nature.
