PRIMARY SCHOOL BREAK-UP

» A.NNUAL PRIZE-GMNG WARDS FOR SWIMMING AND ATTENDANCE For the first time for several years, akr weather ble-s&ed the breaking- up t; eremony at the Rotorua Primary tchool yesterday. Although the ' ieat was oppressive at times, this t ] i ■/as amply compensated by the pleas- J i ire of the outdoor ceremony. ^ 3 The hundreds of children, many of Jiem spending their last few hours in the precincts of the school, were hon- | oured by the presence of a large - gathering of parents, relatives and friends. After the presentation of . the prizes, the children gave a display of physical exercises and a variety of games. ' Mr. W. J. Woolliams, chairman of , the School Committee, made an ap- • peal to parents not to keep their 1 children away because of minor ailments, and said that although there was a roll of over 800, full attend- ; ance was rarely obtained. Mention1 ing the jubilee of the school, Mr. Woolliams said it was first opened 1 in October, 1886. The first headmaster was Mr. J. W. Webber, who 1 had remained in that. position for 21 »' years. The School Jubilee Committee "mtended to present a prize in due 1 course for the best essay on the his1 tory of the school. 1 The headmaster, Mr. J. S. McBean, said the school was now one of the ' largest in the Dominion. Speaking of the difficulties involved in the running of the school, he stressed the necessity for good attendance and punetuality. "We do need the cooperation of the parents in these two matters," he said. To those children ! who are going on to the High School I Mr. McBean remarked: "I would urge you to have at least two or three years at a secondary school/' 1 After presenting the prizes,, the i Mayor, Mr. P. A. Kusabs, extended his congratulations to the recipients. ; "Obey your parents, love God and 'i Honour tho King," were the tnree i maxims he passed on to the children for the coming year. i The Mayoress, Mrs. Kusabs, presented the swimming certificates.
