BERLIN, December 12. Germany's ioremost symphony conductor, Div Wilhelm Furtwaengler, aged 60, denied to the Denazification Board that he 'had been an ambassador of Nazi culture. He claimed that he was the "victim of lies in the world press." His wartime European concert tours were made only to honour Gennan music. He protested in 1933 against the Nazi dismissal of Jewish artists and in 1934 resigned as Rrussian State Councillor and vice-president of the Reich Music 'Chamber. Dr- Furtwaengler, when- asked why he remained director of the Berlin PhilharmOnife Orchestra while Nazi persecution was rampant, said he had to prove to the world 'that art existed which was beyond politics.
