Kean) for the fortnightly period just ended: — Rotorua: — (The fortnightly report tfor the period Deeember 15 to December 31 received from the department's officers stationed in various parts of the distriet show that some large catches of good-conditioned fish were taken. At times the wind reached gale force and made' fishing impossible in exposed waters. Owing to the dry wjealther during- (Deeember th'e fiish have come in about six weeks earlier .than usual and the fly fishermen took many limit bags. Hamurana fished well at times when the wind was from a northerly direetion. Fly fishermen operating at Waatete, Awahou and Ngongotaha both wiading and from boats took many fine conditioned fish! and limits were fairly common." At Rotoiti in the sheltered bays on the south'side several anglers' obtained good sport and fish up to Slbs were taken on the fly- Okataina and Rotokakahi are fishing well but, unfortunately, are exposed to the westerly winds which make it difficult to reach favourite fishing bays. In th'e former lake good conditioned trout up to 7lbs were taken by a party of Auckland anglers and a local fisherman accounted for nine good fish during a half day's fly fishing, on the western shore of the latter lake. Tarawera is not yet produeing such good quality of fish as some of the other local lakes and Rotoma and Rotoehu and Okareka have not been greatly fished. Rouch weather was experienced in the B,ay of Plenty and very few anglers were out Ilowever, some good conditioned fish ranging between two and 4ilbs were taken in the Waimana, Whakatane and Rangitaiki Rivers. Reports from Wairoa and Waikaremoana state that very rough weather has been experienced there. Nevertheless anglers who have been out have had good sport. The class of fish taken range from good to excellent with very few poor specimens being recorded. Details of catches are as follows: — Rotorua Area A. Taupo Distriet During most of the period between Deeember 15 and 31 weather conditions were the worst experienced for this time of year for the last five" or six years. On many occasions the wind reached gale force which made fishing- practically impossible between Taupo and Tokaanu. With the exception of a few days the launches at Taupo end of the lake could not pass Rangitira Point. The Waikato River between the lake and the Aratiatia Rapids has been full of drifting wood consequently fishing was very diffieult- Apparently the good-conditioned fish hav© been driven to the deeper water as the class of trout taken at Jellicoe, Motutere and favourite points has only been fadr. However, several catches of goodconditioned fish were reported from the southern end of the lake.
