. STEAMER AT GREAT BARRIER ISLAND YESTERDAY

Auckland, Friday. After a most enjoyable day at Russell yesterday the Monowai, with 350 holiday-makers on board, saile.d at 11 p m. for Poi t Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island. On arrival in Wairahi Bay, at 7 o'clock this morning, the ship droppod anchor. The weather is still fine and sunny, but a cold southerly wind is b7 owing. . ' The morning was devoted to deck -fpmer, and competitions, while many pessqngers rested on deck in the sun. After luncheon, pienic, bathing a.nd hiking parties were landed at the various bays in the pretty harbour. There is great activity among the passengers who are prepa,ring for tonight's big fancy dress ball, The ship leaves here early, and will arrive at Auckland at 9 a.m. During the vessel's visit to Whangaroa 130 school children were the guests of the Union Company at afternoon tea on board the ship. Sojpe of the youngsters travelled long cV'stances to view the vessel and a few of them tasted ice cream for the first time in their lives. After the tourists had had an opportunity of sightsee'ing at Whangaroa the vessel went back to Russell where she was greeted by a number of vlsiting launches. There is much of historic interest to , b~- seen in and around Russell, and all the tourists took full advantage of their visit.
