CONCLUDING DAY
MISS BEVERLEY AND CHARTERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES - GUSTY CONDITIONS . The final games, in the/ Rotorua .Lawn Tennis Club's annual open tourney were played yesterday and although the weather was fine a boisterous- wind, which increased -during the finals in the afternoon, resulted in the usual large attendance- of spectators being missing ,and to some degree spoiled the standard of play . usnally seen in the finals.During the morning the semi-finals in both championship and Handicap series were comipleted and play in the finals was somewhat delayed in the •afternoon on account of the number of matches in wihich Chartcrs and Miss N. Beverley were finalists. IPlaying in the men's championship singles against Elliott, Chartei's continually outpointed his opponent in the .first set, his plac&ments frequently finding Elliott out of position. The second set was more even, Elliott's play being more steady, but after
beat. Murphy and Miss Bottrell 11-5. Semi-final: Roseman. and 'Miss Hsli beat W-ilson and Miss Mltchell 11-8; Camsron an'd Miss Gameron beat Walker and Miss Steele 11-5. Final: Roseman and Miss Hail beat Cameron and Miss Cameron G-6, 6-4. :
leading 5-4, Charters retrieved the.. position to draw level after a deuce game. The final game of the sst was responsible for some fine play -but good net wqrk by Charters eventually won him the game and the title. In the ladies' sing|les final, Miss N. ■Baverley played a very steady game throughc-ut to take two sets out bf three, both 6-2. More experienced play by the winner frequentiy found Mass Haggitt out of position, while she was also weak in backhand play. .Some fine ..rallies wsre seen in the final of the championship doubles between Charters an-d Johns and Andrews .and Roach, which the first named pair won by an advantage in five sets. In the first set Charters and Johns won 6-2, hard play by both sides being a feature of the set despite the gusty conditions, In the concluding sets, which were also wonby Johns and Charters 6-1 and 6-jg, the latter p-a-ir proved too experienced for their opponents, Charters particularly impressing with aceiirats volleying and sm'art net play. In the ladies championship. doubles, Miss N- Beverley scored another success wihen, partnered by her sister, she won from Misses HaggCtt and MacKay, 6-2, 6-2. Steady play by Miss N. Beverley was again a feature of the match, wfhile the conditions ap-pe-ared to unsettl-e the "play of the opposing-pair. |In the handicap series the bes+ match was probably that between Kent and Lewis and Brown and Elliot. Although the firstnamed pair eventually won, Brown- and Elliott took the first 'set easily 6-2 by hard play. For the remaining two sets Kent and Lewis altered their tacties, using high shots which were difficult to retulm in the high wind. Both Kent and Lewis were also steady in net play and placements and took the final two set-s by a comfortable margin. At the conclusion of the tourney, ■the president of the Rotorua Club, Mr. E. G. Guy presented the trophies to the v/inners an-d congratulated them on their success. It was unfortunate,, ihe said, that the weather conditions had proved so unsuitable and the competitors were to h.c congratulated upon the way they had a-ssist-ed the committee in face of this difficulty- As for a number of years, the brunt of the work had fallen upon Mr. D. MacFarlane of Auckland, who had efficisntly acted as tournament manager, and to him, the players and the Rotorua Club owed a great debt of appr-eciation.
