Every effort has been made to keep the offering very light, but alt tihe same ' .time pleiity of eye and ejar-filling j spectacle has been included. I The plot concems the adventures ,of a young xnotorhoat misehanic who j is trying to obtaiini financial backing I f or his new na.cing engdne. With the aid iof his assisfant, Bumpy, be manages ito meet the dauglhter of a wealthy hoat manufacturer, who gets them j obs in her father's eompany. The engine is built and put in a hoat of neiw design, but1 fails o'n trial due to a fault in consitruetion. ' In desperation the meehanic and ■Bumpy resoxft to amateur piracy to obtain money. The way in which they finally do get their hoat in shape for ' the big internatioinal race leads to a breath-takinjg climax. William Haines as Sandy ihe meehanic has a rofe that gives 'him many opportunities for flippant comedy. In ' dramaltic soenes Ihe ishows uynusual strength in contrast to his usual ' wise-crackipg. Cliff Edwards seores with his likaahle portrayal of Bumpy the assista'nt who keeps things in a continual uproar. M'adge Evans is her own c'harming self in a sparkling role as Shirley, daughter of the boat huilder-
SEGOND FE'ATURE Luis Trenker, ti.ie Tyrolean mountain guide and moltion picture actcrdirector who canie to Hollywood lest year to maka Universal's "The Doomed Battalion" and added impetus to the wave of •rugged masculk.ity which has swcpt the screen world. He has been hooked to play the Majestsic Theatre to-night in "The Rebel," a Napoleonic war drama, laid in the Alps and produced there by a Universal unit from Berlin. In "The Rebel" Trenker again essays some of his spectacular feats of mountain climbing which made him a secsation in the previous picture. The Trenker screenplay, which was produced in three versions — Enig'lish, Germjan and French — av.11 mark the return to piotures of Vilma Banky, who has the feminine lead opposifce Trenker, and Victor Varcoini, hoth American screen favourdtes during the silent era.
