INQUEST ON CHILDREN KILLED QN RAILWAY BRIDGE * A BRAVE GIRL

Marton, Thursday. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Frances May Mason (10) and Mavis Mollie Camplin (3), who were struck by the daylight limited express- on Tuesday on ?. narrow railway bridge south of Kakariki station and killed outright, was held to-day, when the Coroner returned a verdict of accidenal death no blame being attachable to anyone. The principal witness was the engine-driver, who said that when hie came round the bend he saw the children on the bridge- 100 yards off. He applied the emergency brakes, but had no hope of stopping. He ,saw the elder girl pick up the tiny tot and move to the edge. He prayed that th'ey would jump, hut they hesitated, as the drop was 30 feet. The girl held the younger one over the edge of the bridge in a commendable way b"ut both were struck and killed. The coroner commended the driver on his prompt action, saying that he had dono everything to avelt a tragedy. He said it was clear that the qhildren were not in the habit of using the bridge.
