THREE CHRISTCHURCH WOMEN BEFORE COURT GIVEN PROBATION

Christchurch, Dec. 23. Three married women who, aceording to Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop, went out on a thieving expedition yesterday, appeared befox'e Mx\ E. b. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day and were placed on probation for 12 months. Two of them were charged with ^thefts from city shops, and the other was charged with receiving stolen goods. Elsie Cowan, aged 33, of Cashel Street, was charged with stealing two pairs of socks and two ties, valued at 14s lOd, from the D.I.C'., and a paif of Christmas cards and a roll of carnival paper, valued at ls 7d from Simpsou and Williams, Ltd. Amy Kilworth, aged 37, of Seddon Street, was charged with stealing four ties, a pair of socks, two shirts, a swimttiing costume and a doll, valued at £5 4s 2d the property of the D.I.C. Priscilla Carleton, aged 36, of Courtney Street, was charged with receiving from Kilworth, a doll valued at 3s 6d, and two ties valued at 5s. The three pleaded guilty. The Chief-Detective said the three attracted attention in the D.I.C., and were aceosted by the manager. They were interviewed by two deteetives; but when their homes were searched nothing further was found. None of the accused had previously been before the coiirt. The husbands of Kilworth and Cowan were relief workworlcers. Kilworth had six children and Cowan three. The Chief-Detective added that shoplifting was being carried out ^extensively and was hard to detect. Carleton asked if her name \^ould be suppfessed, but the Mhgistrate said He would not think of ordering it. She was old enough to know be'tter.
