1 TOURIST GUIDE SCENIC TRIPS There are a variety of short and long Scenic Trips which may be taken by visitors to the Thermal Region. WHAKAREWAREWA RESERVE This is a mass of intense thermal activity, containing many geysers, fumaroles and mud pools. Admission is free but the employment of a guide g is advised. Buses leave the Bank of New Zealand 8 corner, Fenton Street, every 15 minutes. A guide 8 can be obtained at the destination. Official guiding I fee is 1/- per person. The trip takes about two H hours. TIKITERE (HELL'S GATE) This is one of the most active thermal areas in the district and is notable for the awesome nature of its sights. A feature is the eurious nomenclature of the varied pools. The Rotorua Bus Company 3 makes this trip at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Fare, g 5/- return. Admission to the region is 2/-, and the f trip occupies about two hours. ROUND LAKE ROTORUA This trip covers thirty-five miles and takes two and a half hours. It takes in Hamurana Spring, 1 Hinemoa Caves and Okere Falls and a portion of 1 Lake Rotoiti. The scenery from the road on the I shores'of Lake Rotorua is particularly fine. Fare, I 7/6 return. A stop is made for tea if required. jj The Rotorua Bus Company makes this trip at 10 1 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. « WAIROA, GREEN AND BLUE LAKES I This trip takes the famous Blue and Green I Lakes and Lake Tarawera with Mount Tarawera j in the background. Wairoa, the village buried in | the great Tarawera eruption, is passed. The dis- j tance covered is 22 miles and the time occupied E is two and a quarter hours. Fare, from 5/-. WAIOTAPU. | Following improvements to the paths and j bridges the Waiotapu Thermal Reserve has been 1 taken over by Capt. Walker, late of Tikitere, and j • is now open to visitors. The Waiotapu Reserve is j one of the most interesting thermal areas and at : the same time one of the least known in the locality and its opening provides another oustanding tour1 ist attraction for the district. The following scale of charges is being made: Adults ls 6d and children 9d conducted) ; ls and 6d respectively (uncon- j ducted) . Yiews of the Lady Knox Geyser and ! mudflats, 6d. The Lady ICnox is playing regularly at 10 o'clock every morning and is undoubtedly one g of the finest geysers in the district.. The route runs from Rotorua j to Earthquake Flat and the world-renowned g Waimangu Geyser; afterwards a launch is taken | s across Lake Rotomahana which is partially hot, a I walk across the foot of Mount Tarawera and | | another launch trip across beautiful Lake Tarawera 1 where cars are again taken and pass the scenes 8 | referred to in the Blue and Green Lakes short trip. g j Fare, 15/-, plus 7/6 launch and guide fee. Chrs g j depart daily at 9.30 a.m. | SIX LAKES TRIP jj j A splendid all-day trip which takes in Lakes Rotorua, Rotoiti, Rotoehu, Rotorua, Okataina and Rotokawa. The route traverses wonderful bush scenery including famous Hongi's Track and the ' Okataina Road. Tikitere is visited. Fare, £1, plus ; 2/- guide fee at Tikitere. Cars depart 9.30 a.m. daily. j WAIRAKEI-TAUPO This is one of the longest trips in the area. The mileage is approximately 120 miles. At Wairakei the tourist is conducted through the famous Geyser Valley, and other notable sights are the mighty Aratiatia Rapids, the Huka Falls and Lakq Taupo.
