ITOURIST GUIDE ' SCENIC TRIPS There are a variety of short and long Scenic Trips which may be taken by visitors to the Thermal Region. WHAKAREWAREWA RESERVE \ I This is a mass of intense thermal activity, conS taining man'y geysers, fumaroles and mud pools. Admission is free but the employment of a guide i I is advised. Buses leave the Bank of New Zealand | corner, Fenton Street, every 15 minutes. A guide can be obtained at the destination. Official guiding fee is 1/- per person. The trip takes about two hours. TIKITERE (HELL'S GATE) This is one of the most active thermal areas in 1 the district and is notable for the awesome nature I of its sights. A feature is the curious nomenclature 1 of the varied pools. The Rotorua Bus Company jj makes this trip at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Fare, 5/- return. Admission to the region is 2/-, and the trip occupies about two hours. ROUND LAKE ROTORUA This trip covers thirty-five miles and takes two and a half hours. It takes in Hamurana Spring, Hinemoa Caves and Okere Falls and a portion of Lake Rotoiti. The scenery from the road on the shores of Lake Rotorua is particularly fine. Fare, 7/6 return. A stop is made for tea if required. The Rotorua Bus Company makes this trip at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. WAIROA, GREEN AND BLUE LAKES This trip takes the famous Blue and Green Lalces and Lake Tarawera with Mount Tarawera in the background. Wairoa, the village buried in the great Tarawera eruption, is passed. The distance covered is 22 miles and the time occupied is two and a quarter hours. Fare, from 5/-. ! WAIOTAPU. Following improvements to the paths and bridges the Waiotapu Thermal Reserve has been I taken over by Capt. Walker, late of Tikitere, and is now open to visitors. The Waiotapu Reserve is one of the most interesting thermal areas and at the same time one of the least known in the locality and its opening provides another oustanding tourist attraction for the district. The following scale of charges is being made: Adults Is 6d and child- B ren 9d conducted) ; Is and 6d respectively (uncon- g ducted). Views of the Lady Knox Geyser and | mudflats, 6d. The Lady Knox is playing regularly g at 10 o'clock every morning and is undoubtedly one of the finest geysers in the district.. For particulars and services, apply Aard Offices. GOVERNMENT ROUND TRIP This is probably the most interesting all-day trip in the district. The route runs from Rotorua i to Earthqualce Flat and the woi'ld-renowned I Waimangu Geyser; afterwards a launch is taken | across Lake Rotomahana which is partially hot, a | walk across the foot of Mount Tarawera and | another launch trip across beautiful Lake Tarawera g whei'e cars are again taken and pass the scenes !referred to in the Blue and Green Lakes short trip. Fare, 15/-, plus 7/6 launch and guide fee. Cars depart daily at 9.30 a.m. SIX LAKES TRIP A splendid all-day trip which takes in Lakes Rotorua, Rotoiti, Rotoehu, Rotorua, Okataina and Rotokawa. The route traverses wonderful bush scenery including famous Hongi's Traek and the I Okataina Road. Tikitere is visited. Fare, £1, plus 2/- guide fee at Tikitere. Cars depart 9.30 a.m. | daily. WAIRAKEI-TAUPO This is one of the longest trips in the area. The mileage is approximately 120 miles. At Wairakei the tourist is conducted through the famous Geyser Valley, and other notable sights are the mighty Aratiatia Rapids, the Huka Falls and Lake Taupo.
