GENERAL CONFIDENCE (Rec. Dec. 23) Rugby, Dec. 22. jThe people of Britain 'have -gop'd reason to celebrate Christmas ip a cheerful spirit for conditions are now much; hether than, a year ago, and indee.d for some years past and there is general .confidence that the improvement will continue. ; This ifeeling is strengthened iby the multiplication of encouraging signs from all paxts of the country. Trade has continuously improved, unemploymenlt, although still . larg'e, has substantially diminished; the revenue returns show that the finances cf th& country, compared with a year ago, have improved between £60,000,000 and £70,000,000; the hudget outlook is distinctly brig'ht; railway tmffic returns, one of the most reliable indfications iof conditions, have been distinctly favourable, and th'e tone of the Stock Ebcchange is unusually firm. The improvement in trade, particularly in retail trade, is horne out by the expansion in the note circulation, which last week rose to £380,863,916. This is the highest figure publiely record&d since the amalgamation of Treasury notes with the Bank of England note issue. The total last year at this time was £370,097,554.
