COM(MITTEE REPORTS PRESENTED AT LAST MEETING. CARNIVAL ARRANGEMENTS. The report of the advancement committee presented at the meeting of ithe Rotorua Borough Council on W;ednesday evening was as •folloiws: — The committee reported — iThat arrangements in connection with the regatta were well in hand. A sub-committee of rowing enthusiasts had been invited to assist, ttogether with representatives of the Ngati Wfhakaue. That the committee ihad arranged for the making of permanent seating accommodation for approxima'tely 300 people at a cost of approximately 20. A special request as being made to all business people to decoraite their premises during- carnival week. Each cxf the members of the committee will be supplied with a ribbon with the words "Carnival Official" printed tbereon. iMatters in connection with the carnival are weill in hand. On Tuesday, Dec. 26, the opening! night of the carnival, arrangements have been made for a fireworks display a.t the lake front, free of cost to the committee. In reference to the misunders.tanding whidh has arisen relative to the display by the Gymnasium Club last year, the committee decided to forward the sum of £2 10s, without prejudice, in order to clear up the misunderstanding. It was allso decided to offer prizes of £2 2s and £1 ls, for the best decorated cycle in the procession. A special prize is also being offered of £2 2s and £1 ls for the most meritosdous display from any camper from ,the Borough Motor Camp. The vehicles will be judged at -the camp at 6.30 p.m. and the prize-winners must take part in the procession. With reference to the regatta at Ohinemutu on January 13, all roads giving access to Ohinemutu will be closed during that day and permission will be given to the regatta committee to make a charge of ls for adults and 6d for children for admission to the regatta. Works' Comimittee.
The works comittee recommended: That during the stand-down week ending December 23, the amount available from the Returned Soldiers' Association be subsidised on the basis of pound for pound. That application be made as requested by the Commissioner of Unemployment for authori.ty to carry out the following work under the provisions of No. 5 scheme: — jForma--tion, Seddon Street West, James Street, Malifroy Road, King Street, Ranolf Street, east end of Amohau Stree,t, and improvea-nent work at Ohinemutu. That the reclamatlon work at the lake front be continued on the east side of the wharf. That any residents of Ranolf Street or that vicinity be authorised to remove trees from Ranolf Street, provided the stump also is removed and the work is carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer and at the resident's own risk.
The committee reported — Having considered the letter from the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers re the attendance of the engineer at their annual cdnference, and having no recommendation make. Having arranged for the removal of th-e light from the corner of Fenton -St. and Marguerita Street and plac.ing the light in order to light the ramp giving access to Tilsley St. With reference to the complaint from Mr. Wishnoskie, the committee has authorised the engineer to have the footpath' in James St., put into a reasonable condition. With reference to the letter from the Main Highway, s Board, the engineer has been insitructed that when any maintenance of signs is required. same is to be treated as ordinary highway^ maintenance. That matters in connection with the use of the motor camp for the holiday period are well in hand. Mr. W. Hayden has been appointed as assistant and Mrs. M. S. Black as nig'hit watchman for the period required. The hours of attendance for the attendant and. the night watchman have been fixed. Having* instructed the' engineer that when occasion arises, the watercart is to be put out 011 the street. With reference to the dust nuisance in Arawa St., the engineer has been instructed to sweep up the dust on the north side of Arawa St. be--tween Tutanekai St. and Fenton St. That application has been made to the district engineer, Public Wbrks Department, for the free use of the Ibitumen hea.ter for use in top-dress-ing Arawa Street and other bitumen wbrk. General Committee. The committee replorted: — With reference to the application fcr refund of heavy traffic fees paid by the Waiariki District Maori Land Board, the committee has submitted the facts of the case to the borough solicitor for his opinion. Having considered ai further letter from, Messrs. Hampson and Davys with reference to the subdivision for Mr. A. Kusabs, the com-mittee is of opinion that the original. decision should he adh'ered to. .Having instructed the town clerk to again write to the Whakatane County Goiuncil with reference to the heavy traffic fees on certaip lorries which were co'llected by the Whakatane Oounty Council and should have been paid to the council. With reference to the application by Miss St. Clair for th-e removal of ia tree outside their house in Amohia Street, yio,ur committe has no recommendation to make. With reference to the suggestion that the inspector should lectur© to school chdldreny the comanittee i® agreealble to this being done, provided it can be worked in with the ordinary duties of the inspector. ' Having- instnucted thp inspector to take proceedings against the owner
building permits to the value of £743 16s for the period. The committee recommended: — - That the scale of fares recommended by the taxi proprietors be adopted, i.e., ls 6d for the first mile and ls p'er m,ile -thereafter, this charge to eover the use of the vehicle. ■Two two months heavy traffic fees Ihe refunded to the Rotorua Bus. Co. That the parking of cars and ithrough traffic be prohibited on the ' Arawa, Hinemaru, Haupapa frontages ' of the Town Squar§ on Saturday, December 30. That on December 27, during tbe period of the air pageant, parking of cars be prohibited between tbe hours of H.30 and 4.30 on the following' streets: — |Fenton St. from •-Marguerita St. to Fr-oude St.; Maida Vale Street; Sala Street; F-orestry Avenue. the ' east end of Sophia St., 'Wylie St., and Devon St. That the fees for the registration o-f dogs be the aaa»e as last year, namely 10s and 2s 6d for cattle dogs. B?nd Committee. The committee reported — In view of the fact that the sectiom at the corner of Eruera Ft. and Tuitanekai St. is not very satisfactory without tbe' erection of a platform, the committee has authorised the band to have a trial play-out from the balcony of the Lyric Theatre. This was found^ to be quite satisfactory. Having arranged with the members of the advancement committee with reference to the services of the band during carnival week. In view of the fact that the solo •euphonium player has left tbe band, the committee has advertised for someone to take his place. Applications will be dealt with at the next meeting of the committee. The committee has authorised the musical direetor to see if arrangements can be made for the hiring of a cornet for use up to the p'eriod of the b-and contest.
