HOLIDAY RACING AUCKLAND CUP PRESENTS PROBLEM FOR PUNTERS SOUTHERNERS FANCIEiD

(Notes iby

Despite the fact that a record time was put up by the winner of the New Zealand Cup Palantua she is not engaged at Ellerslie for the Auckland Cup and the southern stables seem to hold a strong hand. Everits as usual have filled very well and the course is hard and is likely to be very fast. Rain, if it comes, is likely to upset a lot of the earlier calculations. The opening- event is the Queen's Plate with a thirteen, most of whom have some credentials recently and as the main is special weight the ra.ce will take a bit of sorting out. Kiltowyn and Sunny Bachelor have the top weights and oif these the former J has been doing some excellent track work while Sunny Bachelor is not to be despised. Gay Marigold, though she failed the other day, is a mare of moods, and if caught in the right humour will take a lot of beating. She is galloping well at Takanini and registered fast time over seven two days ag-o. Catalogue won decisively at Te Awamutu and his record as a two-year-old was good, so good, indeed, that he is sure to be well supported. Epigram should see the mile out without trouble. Killadar will be the hope of Rotorua folks and a success for the Wackrow colours would be very popular. In his las't start he ran well. Limbohm has shaped nicely and Rereatu should go well for Ces Boles. Spiral won the big race at Woodville and Sea Fox is not to be sneezed at over night. It is a teaser for a start and form is very close. Best support ed may he Spiral Cay Marigold Rereatu * * * The field in the Foal Stakes is a classy one with such winners as Whenuakura, Burnish, Mo'ther Superior, Brown. Betty and others. The race is bound to be keenly contested and barrier positions will play their part in determining the order of favouritism. S-porting Blood is a good beginner and Pin Money is also a good mover. Pound Sterling 'should hold Waitaka and King Brierly safe but Day Wind might be a rod in pickle for this. Whenuakura will undoubtedly start favourite, but should have plenty to do to hold oif Burnish, while Mother Superior administered the only defeat Whenuakura has known, but Wiggins' riding made all the difference in that race. Brown Betty is a good sort and Gay Blonde must have a good show as she beigins well. The public choice inclines to Burnish Whenuakura Mother Superior * * # Anything might win the Robinson Handicap and the possibilities in the first division may 'be Star Artist AlleSretto Jonathan and in the second Saltspray Colossical Holly Lu s|c Then comes th'e Auckland Cup with four carrying 8.0 the lowes't burden for a top-weig-ht for years. This makes it practieally certain that the pace will he on most of the way and that in the present state of the tracks a fast time is proibable. Of the four top-weights, Brambletorn has run two miles, King's Knave and Master Brierly have won fourteen furlongs. Brambletorn and King's Knave appeal most of these with Master Brierly more liked than Master Norval, despite his recemt successes. Nightly 7.9 and Rocket 7.7, who are both from C'anterbury, gave an. exhibition gallop over nine furlongs at Riccarton on Saturday and of the . .two Nightly pleased most, though it mnst he remembered that Rocket has the

fident. However, she has the hardest part to do and it will be something like a Motere win . . . once in a lifetime. Minerval can stay but may be missing. Red Sun lost no friends by his form last Saturday and trainer Lowe may take the prize back to Trentham for Red Sun is a great ifihisher. Ca(rfex has not gone the' journey nor has Alloy while Fairway has won over middle distances. Free Air has frequently gone two miles over hurdles and put up good time to win a high weight over thirteen furlongs ,at Pukekohe last year. She may be one of the most dangerous of the lightweights. Gold Trail is well down in the weights for a classic winner but has no't seemed right for some months. The greatest possibility in the seven stone division seems to be Jonathan who ran Silver Scorn to a neck in the fourteen furlongs St. Leger and all but aceounted for her. Should a surprise come, and one is possible, it may be that Free Air or Jonathan will provide it, for both can stay. On paper the southern stables seem to hold a strong hand with Nightly, Rocket and Minerval, while Trentham has Red Sun; Hawkes Bay, Gold Trail and Taranaki, Carfex. The possibilities include King's Kuave, Brambletorn, Nightly, Rocket, Minerval, Red Sun, Free Air and Jonathan and the best read Nightly Jonathan Free Air * * * Eleven are in the Grafton Hurdles and they are mueh of a muchness iif we except the championi lepper Billy Boy, who may find the going too hard. Snow Prince is a possibility, but has spells of soreness which may milita'te against his chances. Thespis has recovered w#ll and Welcome Boy ran creditably on Saturday. Solanio is a good jumper who is not overraced and should go well. Wee Pat is nicely weighted with 9.7 while Mia Stella should see out the two miles better than most. Acervate reads better than Zane Grey or Clan Ronald while Gran't Opal must improve to win. Form inclines to Solanio Welcome Boy Snow Prince ♦ * ♦ There are some very classy sprinters in the Railway and the winner is very well concealed. Croupier has plenty with 9.7 but is a good one as is Puss Moth, who is well supported. Greek Gold and Exaggeration will be coupled and the Ibracket will carry a 'lot of money. Bamibury should not be rejected for his failure on Satur'day for h'e needed the workout. 'Tradesman would be more liked if the weather were wet but there will be a ton of money for Gay Sheila. Silver Streak won at Riccarton and is a class over shorts and British Columbia, rightly ridden, may be a chance for a good return. Diatomous is very fast and so is Pomp, while Gujprantee was the winter of the Champion Two-year-old Plate last year. Hampton Park likes to hear his hooves rattle and so does Boughal. The race, like all other Railways is open and an upset is most probable. The form horses are jGay Sheila Impey's bracket Guarantee ❖ * * The Nursery Handicap sees a field of habies who wil'l not attempt classic honours and perhaps the best may be Gay Egypt Bodyline Top Flight sjc As usual the Christmas Handicap will cause some heart-burnings but present form points to Baroscope Chie'f Cook King's Archer The Deriby run on the seoond day may see favouristism divided 'between Gay Sheila, 'Red Manfred and Golden Hair, while the field for the Royal Stakes include s such as Burnish, Whenuakura and Golden Hair.
