MAU BUDGET PRESENTED TO COURT AS EVIDENCE FOR CROWN DISPOSAL OF FUNDS

Rec. 8 p.m. Apla, Dec. 20. The hearing of the Nelson case was resumed to-day when Inspector Braisby continued his evidence and was still in the box when tlie court adjourned at 3,30 p.m. Among exhibits seized at Mr. Nelson's residence was a Mau Budget prepared and written by Nelson", a f act admitted by the def ence. _ The budget contained the following items: Receipts, taxes paid by the natives, £2400, and fines collected £100, a total of £2500, less an amount retained for village committees of £500, leaving a total of £2000. The contributions received for the women's Mau were £100 and for the Samoan Guardiari £100, the receipts then being £2200. On the expenditure side were the following items: Samoa Guardian, £500; chief secretary, £60; assistantsecretary, £45; office stationery, £55; transport, £40; president, _ £100; eleven minister s, £200; retailers at Tuimalealiifano, £100; at Faipules, £424; village secretary, £132, and the maintenance of the capital (Via-. moso), £344; the total expenditure ; being £2000, leaving a balance remaining of £200. There is an error of £60 in the total expenditure, but these figures are shown on the exhibits.
