(Rec. Dee. 21.) Rugby, Dec. 20. The Minister of Agriculture', Mia.jor W. E. Elliot, in a long statement on the live stock situation in the House of Commons said: ■Notwithstanding the effofts made since Novemher, 1932, to hold and improve the situation of the wholesal& meat market, the returns from the feeding of cattle continued unsatisfactory. In these circumstances it was essential to afford some relief in respect to supplies imported for immediiate slaughter. Accordingly it is intended to issue an order limiting the import of fat cattle from the Irish Free State to 50 per cent for the three months ended March' 31 as comphred with the corresponding period last year. As regarded Canada, the Dominion Governmeht had agreed to cooperate by shipping the exports of cattle both fat and store, to thi's market for th& first quarter of th'e coming year at the figure of the first quarter of last year. Arrang'ements are being made to limit the imports arriving next quarter of foreign canned beef and reduce the imports from foreign countries of chilled beef by the sam'e extent as in. the first quarter of last year. As arranged at Ottawa the imports
of frozen beef from foreign countries will be reduced next quarter by 30 per cent. The situation of the bacon market is also under review land if necessary a reduction in imports from foreign countries by a further 7 per cent on March 1 and an additional 3 per cent on> June 1 will he effected.
