LAND VALUATION

Wellington, Saturday. A Valuation of Land Amendment Bill v/as introduced by Goverrier-Gen-eral's message and read a first time. The b'ill proposes to amend the defiriition of "improvement" in respect of land owned and occupied by the Crown or by statutory local authoTities or reelaimed land. The right of the owner of land to get a new valuation is retained, but he is required to lodge his applicafion before January 1 in order to have the new valuation used for the following rating year. For land taX purposes the last day for applying is March 31. The bill proposes to give local authorities the riglit to object to 'new valuations made on owners' applications. The right of an owner who is dissatisfied with the decision of the Assessment Court to require the ValuerGeneral to reduce the valuation to a stated sum or to acquire the land on behalf of the Government is retained, but it is proposed to extend to the public the right to purchase at that sum. It is proposed to give local authorities powei's which enables them to minimise the unfairness caused by special valuations made on .owners' applications. , ,
