Hamilton Carnival It is proposed to kold a special carnival week in Hamilton ending with the annual regatta. Holid'ay Fares The Railways Department directs attention to an advertisement appearing in another colnmn in connection with the low fares now operating and the running of express trains during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. Special Dux Prizes The girl and boy dux of the Rotorua High School will this year receive special prizes which have been donated by Messrs Walker and Hall, Ltd. The prizes are of unusual design, being the hadge of the school mounted on an oak shield and base, with the winners' name neatly engraved on a gold shield. The respecttive winners are Miss Elizabeth Urquhart and Master Kenneth D. George. Fires in Urewera Bush Our Te Whaiti correspondent reports that heavy bush fires have been raging in the Urewera bush. The fires were still burning on Tuesday night, but their intensity had been lessened by a fall of rain on Tuesday afternoon. It is eonsidered possible that the fires have been caused by picnickers or campers and a warning is extended to these itinerant visitors to guard against carelessness • with fires in this area as such carelessness may result in the destruction of many acres of very valuable bush. Fine Sweet Peas Mr. R. Griffiths, of Arawa House, again this year has a particularly fine display of sweet peas. The blooms in practically every case are perfectly proportioned, the stems long and cleanly cut and the blooms themselves of notably large size. In very many cases, they are growing four to a stem. Inter-School Cricket This afternoon at 1.30 p.m., an inter-school cricket mateh will be commenced between the Rotorua High School and the Hamilton High School at the school grounds. Two days have been allotted for the match, which will be resumed at 10 o'clock to-mor-row (Friday) morning. Proficiency Results Foliowing is a list of pupils of the Ngongotaha School who gained proficiency and competency certificates at the recent examinations. French, McDowell (s) , beat Mitehell, Hale, Queenin, Knaggs (s), 25 — 14; Carroll, Snell, Aitken, Pakes (s), beat Steele, Morland, W. R. Harris, Budd (s), 19 — 18; G. T. Harris, R. Griffiths, Wallis, Herd (s), beat Mewburn, J. C. Bates, Lasenby, A. French (s), 23 — 16. A friendly game played resulted: McGechie, A. L. Jones, Nesbitt, Bertram (s), beat Simpson, Tyson, W. Jones, Corbett (s), 23 — 13. County Finances In his report to the Rotoima County Council last evening the treasurer, Mr. A. Belling'ham, submitted the foliowing details of rates eolleeted since April 1, 1933: North riding, current, £761; arrears,- £539; total, £1300. South riding, current, £1274; arrears, £639; total, £1913. The total of current rates eolleeted during the period was £2035 which represented 30 per cent. of those struck for the north riding and 45 per cent of those of the south riding. The general receipts since the previous meeting were £2819 14s 6d, and the total for the current year £12,394 19s 2d.
