SWIMMING
to-night's carnival TWiO AUSTRALIAN LADY CHAMPIONS TO APPEAR NEW RECOlRDS LIKELY It is seldom th'at residents of Rotorua have the privilege of witnessing world champion swimmers in action, but the opportunity will be afforded this •evening when Miss Frances tBult, Australian ,and British Empire free style champion, and Miss Claire Dennis, lady "breaststroke champion of the world, will appear in several events at a Rotorua Swimming Club carnival in the Blue BaSths. The visiting swimmers, accomp.anied by their chaperone, M'rs. M. Chambers, arrived in the town yesterday at mid-day following outstanding performances at Auckland, Whangarei and Matamata. Brilliant Swimmers S.ince her arriv,al in New Zealand about two weeks ago Miss Bult has performed well up to the brilliant standard which ea'rned her the Bri-
tish Eimpire title and has hroken no fewer than three records and equalled another. All these performances were registered at carnivals in Auckland when she covered 100 yards in 64 1-5 seconds (lowering Miss Farquhar's New Zealand record by 3-5sec.), bettered the same swimmer's record by 1 2-5 seconds for 220 yards and at the last carnival broke the Australian record for 150 yards by 2-5sec. iand the fastest time of Miss Farquhar over the same distance by 2 2-5sec. She also equalled Miss Ena Stockley's record of 28 2-5sec for 50 yards and is considered the most brilliant lady swimmer seen in the Dominion. In her appearance in Rotorua this evening the visitor will have a- worthy opponent in WI- Whareaitu in an invitation scratch 100 yards event and a great race is promised. Whareaitu, who is a Rotorua club swimmer, gained .the New Zealand record of 24 2-5see for 50yds during his , first competitive season at the last New Zealand championships. In similar manner Miss Dennis has given glimpses of the form which made her lady breaststroke champion of the world sinee her arrival in the Dominion and in finishing a 220yds event in. 3min 16 2-5secs at Auckland lower ed Miss J. Webster's New Zea-
land record by 10 4-5secs. Had she not slackened up owing to a misunderstanding regarding the distance it is probable that her time would have gone close to her world record of 3min 8 3-5sees. In an exhibition swim to-night she will be paced, free style, by Miss Jean Greig-, of the Rotorua Club. Interesting Programme In addition to these two appearances, exhibitions of v.arious styles of swimming methods will be closely followed by spectators. One of the most interesting exhibitions will be that given by Miss Bult in her "crawl" stroke and a demonstration of her famous fast turn. In addition to the events in which the visiting ladies' are appearing, there will also be a full programme of club events. In these there will be competitors from Rotorua, Ohinemutu iand Hamilton Old Boys' clubs and some interesting racing is promised in the relays. •Competing for cups donated by the Herbert Smith Trust Fund, the primary school champion of champions, and an inter-school relay race will also be decided, while diversion will be provided in a number of novelty and diving events.
