DRAINAGE SUBSIDY
PETITION TO GOVERNMENT FROM RANGITAIKI RATEPAYERS Whakatane, Saturday. A large meeting of Rangitaiki drainage area ratepayers was held in the Edgecumbe Hall last evening to consider the Government's action in discontinuing its suhsidy for Rangi■taiki drainage maintenance work, the dispr op orti onately high capital rate, and the non-payment of native rates. Mr. W. J. Sumner, who presided, detailed the position as it had been ascertained by a committee, which has been working on the matter for some time past. This committee had decided to ask the Government to rer instate its maintenance suhsidy and to rate the area at a fixed amount, say, £7000 for the balance of the period of 50 years. They also emphasised the unfairness of European ratepayers being saddled with uncollected native rates, and raised the question as to whether the rates of defaulting ratepayers were an extra charge on those who paid. The meeting decided to forward a petition to Parliament to-morrow.
