NGONGOTAHA AND SCHOOL WIN ON FIRST * INNINGS AIJBION AND CITY DRAW The fourth series of McLean Cup cricket matches were played on Sa.turday afternoon in warm weather, but on acconnt of it heing the only day's play left for completion of the series no games were played to a " finish. Ngongotaha and High School both scored three point wins on the first innings and the Albion v. City match ended in a drawn game. The best performances of the day were as follows: — Batting E. CITY BAT FREELY City batted first in the game against Albion and had scored 175 for the loss of nine wickets when
Hampson declared the innings closed a few minutes before 5 o'clock. Alexander (30) and McGill (33) put up a good ffrst wicket stand of 57 runs for City, although the former was dropped four times early in the innings. The remaining hatsmen all played the bowling confidently and good contributions were added by W. Young (32) and M. H. Hampson (28). With' about 15 hours' of play remaining Burton and Marshall opened for Albion and added 39 runs before the partnership was hroken, Marshall heing caught behind the stumps when 13. Wallis was next but lost Burton. after the batsman had contributed 28 and Gresham failed to last. A partnership betweem Wlallis and Sutherland saw the century mark p,assed but it soon became apparent that the required total could not he reached. Sutherland was stumped by Mason after a bright knock for 40 runs and
Lenihan scored two fours and a. smgle before being caught. Penno went to the same fieldsman and Wallis and Targett played out time when 124 runs were on the board. Wlallis was not out for 30 runs after a confident innings. OLD BOYS BEATEN Old Boys went down to High School by 34 runs on the first innings in a • ame pAved at the High School. In ihe'r first innings Old lost three ,v'..ckets aor only 17 runs but a good partnership between Pipson and Beah added 35 runs for the fourth Wicket. Beale was caught by jjawsov; his ovn bowling for 15 but Pipson cont'.nued on throughout the innings for an unbeaten 36 rbns. The side scored 80 runs, Simpson aAnd Dawson being the best High School bowlers. Although Dawson went early Higgins and Alexander put up a good second wicket stand for High School and Old Boys total was passed with six wickets in hand. The side continued on and when the last wicket fell 114 wras on the board, giving High School a lead of 34 on the first innings. 7; Neeson, none for 4. Spedding one for 30. LOW? SCORING Playing at Mamaku both Ngongotaha and the home team scored less than a century in their innings, Ngongotaha gaining three points by 31 runs. Ngongotaha batted first and fared badly, five wickets falling for only 25 runs. However Harding was batting confidently and assisted by the tailenders, Iremonger (18) and Heeps (16) carried the total to 84 for the innings. After losing the first two wickets cheaply for 16 runs, 36 runs were added for the third wicket bj Mamaku, but after that the side colapsed for the samll total of 51 runs. Taking five wickets for 13 runs off four overs, Frost bowled particularly well, as also did Harding (four for 9 runs).
