An Impromptu Race
With their throttles wide open and their engines roaring, two motorcyclists drove down Somme Parade, Wanganui, at about 50 to 60 miles ,an hour the other evening (says the Chronicle). They were evidently engaged in a race from the Duhlin Street Bridge to Hatrick's wharf, for one machine, to which a side-car was attached, was ridden in the centre of the road in an endeavour to overtake the other cycle, which was fairly close to the side of the road. Fortunately th'ere was nb other traffic on the road at the time, although it was between 5.30 o'cloek and 6 o'clock, and no cars drove out from the intersections'. Had a car swung into Somme Parade suddenly as the cycles approached there must surely have been an accident. New Zealand's Charms "One thing about New Zealand that struelc me immediately on landing was the cleanliness of your towns and (th'e freshness of your atmosphere," said the Rev. H. Leggate, who is visiting New Zealand in furtheranee of the Toc H movement; "even your unemployed men have tjheir own patches of garden, and you have so many libraries and such civic selfrespect. You are so free from the overbearing depression that hangs iover Europe, and all your newspapers are free of the sensationalism th'at even the most conservative ef English papers are adopting," he concluded.
