takapuna meeting BIG FIELDS TO CONTEST RACES AT NORTH SHORE , CHANCES OF CANDIDATES

(Notes by

With only about four weeks to the big Christm'as meetings considerable interest is bound to be taken in the running at the Takapuna Jockey ■Club's meeting next Saturday and M3ond!ay. Tnue, the turning course at North iShore is not a true test, for horses drajwn close in have a decided advantage ;and a quiek beginner is essential if anything like a decent possie is to be obtained. Rarely does a meeting pass without a big reverse of form and on no course in New Zealand, save perhaps Wanganui, is it a- case of "horses for coursesJ' The opening event is the Melrose •Maiden and'the class engaged is what the name premises. Alignment has 9.0 and the full brother to Groupier has enough, besides not being a fast beginner. Solo irong is not fast to laave the mark as a rule or her chanee wtould be well regarded but she will be running on at the end. Pelagia is useful but Lagoon has early toe and should run well, Bonny Gay is one which should be taken note of, while others with speed from the harrier are Diversion, Echo Song, 'Sub-Btation, Tondelayo and Miagic Mint. The class is so mloderate that the s'orting out is not easy but present preferences are for IBonny Gay Diversion [Pelagia Five and a half furlongs is the distance of the Spring Handicap and this often trips the unwary. A good beginner is essentia'l in this race for the barrier angle is so had that unlesa a horse is with his field all the way he has little chance in the. short straight of getting up. P^ganelli heads the list and he has twon the race before and is very partial to the course. His weight of 9.2 should be no impediment. iGreek Gold, with' two pounds less, is useful at the distance but is miore inclined to finish on than to get out early. Bambury, however, is very fast out of the slips and Alec Cook's horse should be the bardest to beat if right. British Columbia is rapidly coming into form and with 8.6 should be in the picture. H'ampton Park is a fast beginner and should make a showing: Of the others Quietly, Princess Star and Landlubber appeal most, the final selection being ^ Bambury Hampton Park Paganelli The Ponui Handicap of 9 furs, run under hack conditions, has a field of average class including the big div-vie-payer Versant. If sound he will be hard to ibeat but he was favouring a foreleg the other day after work. Cape Fair .has the top weight and Mr. Kemball's horse should repeafc his northern form. Psychologist is liable to bob up, but both Tavern Knight and Sunny Bachelor have to be caught in the right mood. Gay Broney has been working very nicely and should not be troubled by the turns .as she shewed at Tauranga. Others with some pretensions to consideration are Hawthorn, United and ■Roman Mascot, the most popular being Gay Broney Hawthorn "Versant The odd distance of the Allison Cup often finds out ,a weak spot in horses which were ideemed stayers and as it is just a bit longer than the average middle distance the race is noted for its large divvies. Last year Maori Boy and Tarpoley both paid nice prices but they .both require wet conditions in their favour. Banoseope has the topweight and "Nudger" Cuck:sey's representative will take a bit of beating on his recent form. Speedmint with 8.12 is nicely in but she is not a safe mare to follow and his proved very expensdve to punt- j ers. If she were right sh'e should be j hard. Merry Damon, who carried over j thirteen stone into a place during the j winter, has come up friom Gisborne and he will take a bit of beating with j 8.10 deapite his ten years. Miaster ; Norval won at Te Rapa and is one of ; the early favounites, but has tjo reckon with the consistent Alloy wh'o ; is well suited by the course. Eager Rose is too erratic to be sure of but she has Won on the Shore before . and may do. it again. Last year's win- j ner, Maori Boy, should go well if it be wet while Mungatoon is a very likely one in the lightweights. Others ■with chances are Palm Queen and iTrishna. The race is open with early preferences for (Mierry Damon iMjungatoon Alloy | [There is not much to go upon in the Gambria Handicap, but what form j there is points to j Wahroonga j (High Crest Gay Blonde IT'he Takapuna Plate has retained

its popularity and at the time of ■writing divisiOns are carded for the safety number of the course is only .*23. The ones likely to be puhlicly supported are Jonathan . Kiltowyn Ruri (The Tdri Highweight has a mixture of jumpers and hacks included and has the makings'of . an interesting race. At the time of writing fancies lean toward: Snow Prince Black Miarlin Free Air jA. good class of sprinter headed by Paganelli is carded in the* Cheltenham six and though he has to give away a great deal of weight he will be well supported provdding he starts in this in preference to the Spring Handicap .earlier in the dajy. Prodyxo is nicely in with 7,9, but has to beiat Whakapara and Puriri Park both of whom are very .well .treaied. King Ford is partial to the turns and so is Limex while Lady's Boy. should ibe at h'ome in wet conditions. "Tena■koe, if ready, might surprise, but the popular support will come for Paganelli Puriri Park Hampton Park FINAL PAYMENTS Auckland, Friday.
