NEW ZEALAND CURRENCY LEGAL TENDER FROM YESTERDAY WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH

Wellington, Friday. Explaining the operation of the Coinage Act which came into operation to-day, the Minister of Finance, Rt. Hon. J: G. Coates/ stated that New Zealand coins,- which are now being issued, are made legal tender for an amount Uot -exceeding 40s and that British coins would r'emain legal tende'r -for a similar amount until the change-over had been completed and the Government ' was s'atisfied that the whole of ' the British' coinage had been withdrawh from circulation. Action would then be taken- under the Coinage Act'to declare British coins no longer legal tender in New Zealand. ' The Minister also pointed out that Australian silver coin was not legal tender in the Dominion and that there had never been legal authority for its circulation in New Zealand.
