NEED FOR CARE help in christchurch going to wrong people SCHOOL DISTRIBUTION

-By Telegraph — Copyright).

Christchurch, Monday. For the first time for many months, the Unemployment Committee has had before it evidence that the number of men in need of relief wages or ratiqns is decreasing. The central relief committee reported that the number of families to which rations j had been distributed during the last j fortnight had been reduced hy 400. It was also reported that increasing j numbers of men were informing the paymaster that they were leaving to take .other work. The committee discussed to-day a complaint made a fortnight ago that boots distributed by the business men's relief committee had, in cases not been given to the children of the unemployed men, but to children of men in regular employment at good wages. Mention was made in the original complaint of children of the em- j ployees of the City Council receiving j boots. These complaints were inves- j tigated and proved to be well-found-ed. One of the men whose child received boots was earning £5 Is 6d weekly. The distribution was made through the schools. The committee eame to no conclusion, hut expressed the general belief that the distribution of boots should be closely supervised.
