Little-Travelled Mian "Whai do we know of England, who only England 'know," says the poet, but apparently the sentiment is equally applicahle to New Zealand. A tourist in North Canterbury recently took a side road, trying to reach' the sea, and asked the way of an elderly man he happened to meet. Though the station the man worked on fronted the sea, he had never been past the immediate precincts of the homestead, in spite of having been there for several years. In the 78 years of his life he had never heen south of Akaroa or north of Omihi, which is less than 50 miles north of Christchurch. Police Commissioner "Paid Out" A case which caused considerable amusement came before Mr. T. 'E. Maunsell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court in Nelson recently, when sa man was charged with failing to move to the left to allow an overtaking vehicle reasonahle space to pass, after the signal had been given. The defendant pleaded guilty. The evidence showed that defendant had kept th'e ear behind him all the way up the Moutere Hills from the Moutere side and part of the way down the Nelson side. Unfortunately for him, one of the oecupants of the overtaking car was the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann. Defendant said that he pulled ever twicey, hut th'e car did not pass,. so he adopted the "pay out" tactics and kept the car behind. It cost him £1 in fine and costs.
