CLIPPINGS FROM "THE CHRONICLE." August 7, 1897.— iThe quietude has ; been broken by the Visit of several i notable personages (.states a Taupo correspondent). Last week it was Mr. Reaney, on his periodical inspection of roads and bridges. He went on to Tokaanu, and while there chose a site for the proposed new wharf, which is much needed. Then came Mr. Herries, M.H.R. for the district,, on a visit to this part of his constiituency. He was interviewed and interviewed by all and sundry in town and neighhourhood, and during Saturday evening headed a deputatioi? to the visiting Cahinet Minister. Last Saturday evening, Mr. HallJones, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. Horneman, arrived from ;W(airakei, having stopped there a few hours to see the sights. They put up at Gallagher's Hotel, where a good, representative deputation assemblqd to see the Minister, and put before him the various requireraents ^ of the district, Mr. Herries introduced ithe deputation, and spoke on the subject of the re-building of th'e bridges over the Mohaka and Tau-xanga-Taupo lines. Reference was also made to the A.C. Bath, and the desirability of securing it for the use of ffie townspeople. Mr. Hall-Jones promised to put the matters before his colleagues. On Sunday morning he left for Wellington via Tokaanu. Th'e experimental farm at Rangitaiki, under the charge of the Lands and Roads Department, is being utilised this year, contracts having been let for ploughing ,and" feneing the fifty acres, and these contracts are fast nearing completion.
