DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE ADJOURNS UNTIL JANUARY A S'UPREME EFFORT -

Rugby, Nov. 22. The Bureau of the Disarmament Conferenee met at Geneva and unanimously agreed that the work of the general commission of the Disarmaj ment Conferenee should be postponj ed until some time in January. Mr. A. Henderson said that as the ■ result of conversations between the ! delegates of Britain, France, Italy and the United States the unanimous view was revealed that a supreme effort should be made to conclude a disarmament convention. It was suggested by these powers that a meeting of the general commission on December 4 was not advisable, as it was l recognised there were several political questions which were too important to encourage any hope of a successful issue from a premature discussion in the general commission. Supplementary Efforts Meanwhile it has .been suggested that the work of the Conferenee at this stage could be best assisted by parallel and supplementary efforts between the various States and with the full use of diplomatic machinery. Mr. Henderson added that the hope had been expressed that these efforts would be energetically pursued with a view to advancing in every possible way the work which lies before the general commission. Mr. Henderson will consult with delegates with regard to the committees which are now engaged at Geneva in bringing the Draft Convention into conformity with the amendments which have been proposed. The meeting ended with an anticlimax. Mr. Henderson's statement being accepted without discussion owing to M. Boncour (France) declaring he would not make a state•'ment if no other person attempted to impart his own meaning to Mr. Henderson's declaration. The conferenee then adjourned till the end of January.
