Auckland, Saturday When in the mid-Tasman the liner Monterey, which arrived this morning was called up by the American freighter Golden Cross, which desired wiedical attention for an injured sea•man. The message was received late •on Wednesday lafternoon, and by arrangement the ships met the following evening at six o'clock 525 iniles west of the North Cape. A boat put off from th& Monterey, and the injured man was lowered on a stretcher to the boat and rowed to the Monterey, where h'e w,as hauled aboard and placed in the ship's hospital. Within half-an-hour both ships were on their way again. The injured man, Christian Gardell (69) went dovfri a ladder in th'e engine-room and was apparently overcome by heat, hecause later be was found lying on the top of the superheater, burned so severely that it was feared that he might die before port could he reached. As the freighter carried' no doctor it was decided . to call for help. Gardell was removed to hospital this morning. His condition is reported to be satisfactory.
