industry requests an extension of the code TRIAL SATISFACTORY

W]ashington, Nov. 17. The steel industry to-day requested the N.R.A. to extend the code until May 31, 1934. At the same time it recorded a formal resolution of general satisfaction with the operations of the code 1 in its effect on industry. Originally the steel code adopted a trial period of three months. Mr. Roosevelt to-day received the Government report that 1,000,000 men had been chanlged from the relief roll to the Federal pay-roll through tlie civil works acTministration under the plan cabled on November 8. Forthwith he ordered that the first pay cheques he ready shortly, naming the war veterans' administration as th'e distributing agency. General Hines, the administrator, said the newly-employed men may fehl sure that they will have the pay cheques on November 25, in time for Thanksgiving Day. Mr. Roosevelt, the President, announced on November 8, the expansion of the Federal Relief programme, aimed at taking 4,000,000 men off the public relife rolls. The plan involves th'e creation of a civil works administration and the use of 400,000,000 dollars of public works funds. All will work on a 30-hour w"$ek.
