On Licenced Premises Ronald Gardiner, a forestry did not appear when he was cIi^H in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. with heing after hours on licensed premises October 1. Senior-Sergeant stated that accused was one numher of men found on the premises at Lake House Hotel, the other having been previously dealt the court. This defendant had to Auckland immediately after offence and some little time had lost in locating him. Defendant fined 10s with similar costs. Visit of Maori "King" It is anticipated that the elected Maori "king", Te Rata visit the Rotorua district next thus breaking the seclusion which native "kings" have so far maintained. Te Rata will definitely attend larige gathering at Tokaanu on December 12 when the Tuwharetoa will open a new meeting- house and it is expected that h'e willH his first visit to Rotorua after fl Unregistered Rifle In the Rotorua Magistrate's Court Tewi Nirai, a Maori bushworker, was yesterday convicted and ordered pay costs 31s for 'being found inH possession of a rifle of which he was not the registered owner. Senior Sergeant Carroll said that the rifle had been found in Nirai's possession in his camp and he had claimed he had found it in the bush. It been established, however, that the rifle was the property of a Tolaga Bay sheepfarmer, who had a bach at Rotoiti. The rifle was ordered to be returned to its registered owner. Ragwort Eradication It is understood that supplies of sodium chlorate for the eradication of ragwort on Crown lands is being made available by the Agricultural Department and that the work is being undertaken in this district immediately. It is generally considered however, that the period for the effective use of sodium chlorate has passed and that if spraying were to be carried out, it should have been done six weeks or two months ago. P.W.D. Activities The revival in Public Works activities around Rotorua is shown by the fact that there are now 190 full time men engaged on the various P.W.D. johs in different parts of the district. When the first wholesale curtailment was made in the department's activities the number of men working in the district fell below Chicken Poisoner

A very mean act is reported from Invercargill. A poultry fancier, Mr L. Brumby, had 200 chickens in his run on a recent Sunday evening. 0n Monday morning he was horrified to find 33 lying dead round the drinking fountain. by Monday night 62 were dead and it was then that he took from the beak of one of the birds piece of food which was taken to a chemist. It proved to he phosphorous on bread, indicating clearly that late on Sunday night or early on Monday morning this poison had been deliberately left in his chicken run. Mr. Brumby is the loser by about £6 if the chickens are valued at 2s each. Actually he has lost more than this hecause 14 of the birds were pedigree chickens worth about 5s each. The Cycling War The recent decision of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to debar cycling events from meetings held under its jurisdiction was discussed at a meeting of the Waikato Sub-Centre held at Hamilton this week. It was decided to enter an emphatic protest at the action of the controlling association and to approve programmes including cycling arraniged hy cluhs affiliated to the sub centre. Athletic Handicaps Advice has heen received from tbe. Rotorua delegate of the Waikato SubCentre, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association that the New Zealand executive has approved the principle of competitors being handicapped "to win from virtual scratch." was also stated that the annual sub*centre championships would he held at Cambridge on January 20, 1934.
