In the House of Commons Mr. McGovern asked if the War Office was prepared to have the whole of the evidence of the Baillie Stewart case referred to a legal committee of the House with permission to take fresh evidence in view of the gr owing belief outside the service of his innoceiice. Mr. Duff -Cooper replied that he was not aware that fresh evidence was available or of a growing belief of • the innocence of Baillie Stewart. In point of fact, Baillie Stewart had made a full confession of his guilt after being convicted. ■ Mr. McGovern: Can you produce the written confession. Mr. Duff Cooper: It is not in the public interest to publish it. Mr. McGovern said that in view of the Mnsatisfactory -reply- he- will raise the matter' at the adj ournment. He later stated, "I was warned that . I should probiably receive such attswers and that there was no truth in them. I-am now sending a letter -to Lord Hailsham, askirig to see the confession £md also to visit Baillie Stewart. Colonel -Baillie Wright, father of Baillie Stewart, declared that it was absolutely impossible for -his son- to have- conf essed.
