Danger in Sodium Chlorate

After Mr. Stuart Duthie, a settler of Te Kumi, finished smoking a cigarette, he threw the butt on to a sack, which was used as a door mat. As the stump was still alight he pressed it with the heal of his boot, which aetion caused a violent explosion, followed by a burst of flame which, enveloping his body, caused many burns. The sack had formerly been used when spraying ragwort with sodium chlorate.
