MAKING CARS FIREPROOF

INGENIOUS EXTIN GUISUER A most ingenious fire extinguishier which is so schemed that it automatically sprays extinguishing liquid on the most likely sources of fire in the event of a car overturning or coming into violent contact with' any object, has recently been introduced by Neville's Automatic Fire Extinguishers, of Eastwood, Nottingham. The device consists of a collapsdble container filled with carbon tetrachloride and a special form of releaaa valve, both of which are mounted on the front of the dashboard or in some, other suitahle position, the container is connectied at its outlet to a copper'pipe with branches leading to various pre-selected danger points such as the petrol tank, carburetter float chamber, and so on, whilst the other end of the conta.iner is linlced up with th'e release valve. this in turn, is coninected by flexible tuhing to the valve of the spare wheel. The reliease valve embodies a universally mounted pendulum so arranged that movement beyond a certain podnt in any direction operates a catch which releases the air valve and so' allows air from, the spare tyre to flow into the con-. tainer and expel the liquid. It will be seen therefore that if the car receives a sudden violent jolt

as it would if in a collision with another vehicle, the fire extinguishing liquid is automatically directed on tc the likely sources of fire; exactly the same happieins if the car should overturn. In addition to the automatic release valve mechanism, there is an independant eontrol connected to a Bowden wire to a levier for fitting or the facia board, thus1 enabling the extinguisher to be brought into action at will.
