HIGH SCHOOL

rotorua board. NUMBER. OF SCHOOL PUPILS TAKE UNIVERSITY TERMS HEADMASTER'S REPORT * The Rotorua High School Board met last evening. There were present Mr. H. M. Martin (in the chair), Messrs. H. A. Goudie, H. Tai Mitchell, 0. H. Coleman, Archdeacon Chatterton, Dr. H. Bertram and Mrs. I. M. Davidson. The headmaster (Mr. W. G. Harwood) reported, inter alia: — "The roll of the senior school stands at 146 and 'of the junior school at 147. "On October 24 and 25 the school was visited by Messrs. Parr and Mawson, of the Secondary Schools' Inspectorate. Their visit was chiefly concerned with recommendations for senior free places and the award of higher leaving certificates. Of the thirty candidates for senior free places, twenty-four were recommended, and four received extensions of their junior free places." All the nine candidates for higher leaving certificates were successful. "The following pupils kept terms at Auckland University College. — C. W. Randerson in economics I., political science I, and history II. S. J. Alexander in jurisprudence, Roman law and law of property. Myrtle Burgess in Latin I, English I. Joan Foster in English I, History I. Agricultural Plots "Work on the agriculture plots has proceeded steadily and during the last week-end areas of one acre each have been put down in temporary and permanent pasture. In this connection the thanks of the school are due to Mr. Hardcastle for the loan of horses and implements. The agriculture boys also spent one Saturday on the Governmental Experimental farm at Ngakuru, and thanks are due to the Department of Agriculture for assistance with transport and general cooperation. "I have to record generous gifts to the school library by Mr. E. Earle Vaile, who in addition to presenting a set of Chamber's Encyclopedia, has authorised the purchase of books to a further value of approximately £12. "The annual concert was held on October 26 and 27 in the Majestic Theatre, when the school produced Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, "H.M.S'. Pinafore." The production was an undoubted success, and drew very favourable comment generally. It is my intention to attempt another of Gilbert and Sullivan's works next vear, provided Mr. Buchan's position is filled by someone of similar musical ability. "In connection with the opera I must record my appreciation of the great work performed by the ladies of the staff in arranging for the costuming neeessary to the production, and of the ready and willing assistance rendered by parents and friends. "The O.C. Northern Command bas arranged to inspect the school company on Friday next, November 3, at 2.30 p.rn. I hope some members of the board will be able to be present at the parade.
