LORD WAFEFIELD PRESENTS A FINE PAINTING TO NEW ZEALAND LONGSTAFF'S "CARILLON"

Wellington, Monday. At a meeting of the Board of 1 Trustees of the National Art Gallery j and Dominion Museum to-day, - the j Prime Minister, Rt. Hqn. G. W. For- . bes, who presided, announted that a J cablegram had been received from : the High Commissioner, London, in- j timating that Lord Wakefield of j Hythe, had purchased Captain Long- ! staff's famous painting "Carillon," j symbolising New Zealand's heroic j sacrifices in the Great War. It is a j magnificent picture and Lord Wakefield has requested the Prime Minister to accept it .on behalf of the people of New Zealand. The Prime Minister stated that he had despatched a "reply asking the High Commissioner to convey the following message to Lord Wakefield: "The High Commissioner for New Zealand has informed me .of your generous presentation of Captain Longstaff's painting 'Carillon,' symbolising New Zealand'S sacrifices in the Great War. On behalf of the Government and people of the Dominion I have great pleasure in accepting the painting and desire to express appreciation of your magnificent gift, which constitutes further practical evidence of your lordship's continued interest in the Dominion. The picture will be hung in our new National Ayt Gallery, which building is now in the eourse of erection, and will form a most appropriate and valuable addition to the works of grt to be housed therein."
