SEYERAL CHRISTCHURCH MEN CAUGHT REDHANDED STIFF FINES IMPOiSED

Uhristchurc", monaay Four men eonvicted of offences connected with hookmaking were fined amounts totalling £100 hy Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. Accused were caught red-handed on Saturday, when plain clothes constahles and detectives made arrests. iFines were imposed as follows.— Maurice Gooiige Morton, .aged 68 years, descrihed as a bookmaker, £20; Wllliam Joseph Brosnahan (39), hutcher, £20; John Harris Prisk (30), motor driver, £20; Hugh Herlihy (43), barman, charged with using the puhlie bar of the United Seryice Hotel as a eommon gamingh'ouse, £40. Morton and Herlihy were arrested in the har of the United Seryice Hotel, and others at the whippet meeting at Bushey Park. The magistrate said he was surprised' that such a business should have • -been -carried oh,jn.^ne:of the leading hotels. He felt sure that th'e Licensing C'ommittee would have sometliing to say about it. A third man arrested at Bushey Park was remanded.
