POLICE SEARCHING BIG SMOULDERING SLACK HEAP AIR OBSERVATION

-By Telegraph — Copyright).

Hamilton, Monday. In connection with the search for Mr. Samuel Pender Lakey, of Ruawaro, who is believed to be dead, Captain j. D. Hewett, of Auckland, accompanied by an observer, made a flight of about two and a-half hours' duration over the district without finding any trace of the missing man. Speeial. attention was paid to Lake Whangape, over which the machine was flown low. A similar examination was made of a number uf small lakes nearer the Waikato River, which was traversed from the Huntly Bridge to the new structure at Tuakau. It is thought that Mr. Lakey's body could possibly have been buried in a huge heap of burning coal slack at the Renown mine, Rotowaro. Work to remove the slack was commenced yesterday. The activities were of an arduous nature. The heat was intense and several officers suffered burns. One estimate regarding the pile of slack is that it contains between 6000 and 8000 tons of material.
