Griffiths, J.P., charged on two counts with the theft of bicycles, in one case the property of Dudly Hardie and in the other of a person j unknown. On the application of the police, the accused was remanded to appear again before the court on Monday, Novemlber 2. - Relief Worker Scalded A relief worker, named. G. H. D. Holden, one of the gang engaged on the Rangiuru Street widening, was admitted to hospita.1 yesterday suffering from a badly scalded leg. Mr. Holden was apparently using one of the small mud pools which have broken out on the side of the batter for the purpose of heating a bottle full of tea and slipped into the mud. The foot and calf of the leg were badly scalded. ' School Opera Financial Success An intimation that the recent Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, "H.M.S. Pinafore," prodnced by the pupils of the Rotorua High School had resulted in a profit of over £70, was given by the headmaster (Mr. W. G. Harwood) at last evening's meeting of the Rotorua High School Board. The money is to go toward the school magazine fund. Tributes to the high standard of the production were paid by members of the board, and the headmaster indicated that it was his intention to attempt another Gilbert and Sullivan opera at a future date. Dance to Band Music The Municipal and Boys' Band will hold a dance and 500 tournament in the Majestic Ballroom to-morrow night. Club Nights Popular The popularity of the club nights reeently instituted at the Blue Baths led to a decis'ion to hold similar club nights weekly at the meeting of the Rotorua Amateur Swimming Club last Friday evening. Thursday evening's were selected, commencing at 7.30 p.m. Kuirau Steam W'ork has already commenced on piping the overflow from the Kuirau pool in order to minimise the steam nnisance between the Lake House corner and the Utuhina Bridge. It is anticipated that the pipinig of the water underground will largely remove the troulble although it will not j be possible to prevent steam driftj ing from the pool itself. It has been suggested in this connection, how- ! ever, that overhead red lights he i erected on the road opposite the pool | as a warning to motorists. Good Prospects For Season I Inquiries for houses to let during j thie holidays indicate an exeellent season. One land agent stated yesterday that the inquiry was the best he had received for five years past and dn his opinion indicated exeellent prospects for a record season. Inquiries generally were for a term of about a fortniight and were in the majority i of cases for furnished residences. j Rents generally had come down and | were he estimated, approximately 30 per cerit. lower than they had been. Farm properties were still in demand but had shown a slight falling off due to the advancing season. There was no- doubt, he considered, that the pruspects of developing' Rotorua land were becoming increasingly recognised.
